ILLINOIS STOCK CAR HALL OF FAME Announces Class Of 2014 APRIL 12, 2014
Our third annual Hall of Fame festivities started at 1pm at Wayne Lensing’s Historic Auto Attractions Museum in Roscoe, IL. The afternoon reception was attended by this year’s Inductees, their families, friends and race fans eager to view the unveiling of the 2014 Inductee displays. The Hall of Fame room underwent a total transformation in order to make room for the new displays. Our growth has been astounding in 3 short years.
Outside the front entrance the attendees were excited to see Elmer Gerloff’s 1957 Chevy and Pat Heaney’s 1967 Chevelle Stock cars on display. At 2pm there was a special Photo Shoot for all Inductees and attendees courtesy of Jimmy “A” Ambruoso @ Finish Line Photos. He captured many special moments throughout the afternoon. All of the photos are on sale at his website finishlinehotos.com or by calling 815-623-3200.
Saturday evening the Induction Ceremony took place at the Hoffman House/Holiday Inn in Rockford, IL. The Outside display consisted of out Hall of Fame Car, a 1970 Ford Torino owned by Keith Grantland and Larry Robb. This car is a tribute to Keith’s Dad Harold Grantland. Also on display was the above mentioned Stock Car owned by Pat Heaney.
To kick off the opening ceremonies, HOF Founder Art “Fireball” Fehrman thanked everyone for attending. The many family, friends and fans traveled from Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Colorado. Our Emcee Michael Papp opened the program with the reading of our 26 2012 & 2013 Inductees which included an accompanying slideshow featuring all of these pioneers of Illinois Short Track Stock Car Racing.
The Induction Ceremony began with the late Whitey Gerken representing the Northwest Region. Whitey was a longtime front runner on area stock car ovals, as well as a competitor in USAC and NASCAR competition. He was always among the top drivers at the old O’Hare Stadium in Schiller Park. Whitey claimed track championship honors at Chicago’s Soldier Field in 1966 and at Illiana Motor Speedway in Schereville, IN in 1968. He won O’Hare’s All American 500 in 1963 and the National Short Track Championships 200 lapper at the Rockford Speedway in 1968. Accepting on his behalf was former teammate Eddie Jast.
Bryant Tucker was the Midwest Region Inductee. Bryant, affectionately known as “Gentleman Bryant Tucker”, was a stock car champion at Soldier Field, Raceway Park and Mance Park Speedway during his exciting career. He always drove a Buick and he won 5 Championships. He won 17 features in 1953 at Raceway Park driving a 1941 Buick. He captured 3 straight Championships at Soldier Field in 1960, 1961 and 1962 driving a 1957 Buick. He closed out his career at O’Hare Stadium in 1963 driving a 1963 Buick Convertible. Bryant made Stock Car racing Cool! Bryant was not only a terrific driver but he was a self-taught mechanical genius at an early age. Around 1951 he bought a 1941 Buick Limited with a 141 inch wheel base and cut the body off behind the drivers door. After removing the torque tube drive shaft and adding ramps, he made a six-wheel Buick Car Hauler. Later he designed his own transmission using a standard transmission and planetary out of a Dynaflow. Accepting his award was his longtime Pit Crew member Ben LaMendola of St. Augustine Florida.
Tom Jones was the Northeast Region Inductee. Tom began racing stock cars at O’Hare Stadium in 1964. He won the track’s Cadet/Hardtop division championship the following season and moved into the track’s late model division the following year. He competed in USAC stock car ranks for a number of years, before winning Waukegan Speedway late model crowns in 1975 and 1977. Tom claimed the Grundy County Speedway (Morris, IL) late model title in 1981. In 1982 he pretty much became a full-time competitor on the American Speed Association (ASA) tour. Tom’s biggest victory came in ASA action at Pennsylvania’s Jennerstown Speedway, winning a 400 lap contest in 1993. Tom was present to accept his award and applauded by his entire family which came from far and wide to support him.
Frank Shickel was the Bloomington Area Inductee. Frank drove stock cars in a career that spanned over five decades. A 1955 Chevy was his first race car and he became a dirt track driving Ace at such tracks as Danville, Fairbury, Farmer City, Granite City, Kankakee and the miler track at Springfield. In 1971 Frank was the most improved late model driver at Farmer City. He was the Track Champion at Fairbury in 1973, 1976 and 1977. Frank won his last race on his 62nd birthday. If that wasn’t exciting enough he was also inducted into the Peoria Speedway Old Timers Hall of Fame along with his son Junior Shickel making history as the first Father Son Duo to be inducted in the same year. Frank holds the distinction of being the only driver to drive in a race which included his sons, granddaughter and grandson. Frank accepted his award with loud applause from the crowd.
Bill Koenig was Inducted as Car Builder/Mechanic. Bill was a car owner and builder who won numerous Late Model stock Car feature races at Raceway Park with the likes of Bud Koehler, Ted Janecyk and others handling the driving chores. Getting involved in drag racing as a young man, Koenig shifted his attention to Stock Car racing, putting some fast cars together right from the start. With Janecyk behind the wheel Koenig was the Championship car owner at Raceway Park in 1965. Joining forces with Bud Koehler the following year, the “K&K” team would win a total of 6 track titles at Raceway Park. Bill was delighted to receive an e-mail from Wood Brothers Racing congratulating him on behalf of Glen and Leonard Wood for being Inducted into the HOF.
Howard Tiedt was Inducted as Promoter. Howard was the owner of Santa Fe Speedway and started promoting it in 1953. The property was originally built by Howard’s father Frederick in 1896 as a Horse Racing Track. Howard built the unique Half Mile Track with a shorter quarter mile oval inside. In 1954 during the tracks second year of operation, the Nascar Grand National Division which is now the Sprint Cup Division ran a 200 lap race there. The Track hosted such famous drivers as Lee Petty, Buck Baker, Herb Thomas, Dick Rathman and later drivers such as Bobby Allison, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough and Kyle Petty. Howard was continually improving Santa Fe and it was known as the most modern facility at the time attracting sold out crowds and TV news reporters doing feature broadcasts from the Track. Accepting his award was his wife Marion and son Gary.
Elmer Steinbeck was Inducted as Race Official. Elmer was involved in stock car racing pretty much sinc4e it started in the Chicago area in the late 1940’s. Elmer helped leading driver Tom Cox for many years and was listed as the car owner of Cox’s #11 Oldsmobile. Elmer’s involvement in racing changed when he was asked to score the races at Chicago’s 87th Street Speedway in the early 1950’s. Before you knew it, Elmer was working seven and sometimes eight times a week. He handled the scoring at tracks like 87th Street and Santa Fe Park Speedway as well as others throughout the Midwest. He was the chief scorer at O’Hare Stadium and developed an individual scoring system for the 33-car O’Hare American 500. When O’Hare closed down after the 1968 season, Elmer began working for Hugh Deery at Rockford Speedway. He joined the staff At Illiana Motor Speedway in 1972 and retired from the Chief Scorer’s position after the 2007 season. Elmer accepted his award amid the applause of his family, friends and fans in attendance.
